The World Languages Department is dedicated to motivating and expanding students' ability to speak a foreign language. To achieve this, the department offers a complete language immersion experience. In order to build fluency, audio-lingual, student-oriented activities are used in every course. The department aims to prepare qualified students for Advanced Placement exams.

This course is a year-long introduction to the basic elements of the Spanish language and culture. Students study major vocabulary categories, parts of speech, and other fundamental components of Spanish grammar. The course covers all four learning modalities: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. By second semester the expectation is that all students will communicate exclusively in the target language. This course satisfies one year of the world language requirement for the high school diploma in the state of California. Prerequisite: None.

AP Spanish Language and Culture
Conducted entirely in Spanish, this course focuses on the six required themes by the College Board: Global Challenges, Science and Technology, Contemporary Life, Personal and Public Identities, Families and Communities, Beauty and Aesthetics. This course stresses oral communication skills, emphasizes conversation and includes review of major grammatical points and vocabulary expansion. The program provides guidance and practice in different writing skills: narrative, descriptive, and persuasive. The cultural component stresses in depth the development of Spanish and Latin American culture. Passing the AP Spanish language exam, the students may be granted college credit. Prerequisite: Spanish for Spanish Speakers 2A/B, or departmental placement test.

This is a year-long course featuring deeper training in listening comprehension, speaking, reading and writing. The study of French life and culture with an emphasis on contemporary France is covered, as well an introduction to French Art and Literature. This course is strongly recommended for students planning on pursuing a college degree, as this course completes the third year recommended by the UC and Cal University systems. All students are expected to communicate exclusively in the target Language. This course satisfies one year of the world language requirement for the high school diploma in the state of California. Prerequisite: French 2A/B with a C or better.

AP Spanish Literature and Culture
Conducted entirely in Spanish, this course is designed to expose students to the formal study of Spanish language texts from Spain, Latin America and the United States, from the Middle Ages until the 20th Century. This course prepares the student for the AP Spanish Literature and Culture exam, providing tools to succeed in literary analysis, and in the exploration of the historic and cultural context where the texts were created. The program emphasizes the use of appropriate grammatical and syntactic structures, and the knowledge of literary terminology and poetic devises to be used in essays that analyze the required reading list by the College Board and addresses the six main themes: Las sociedades en contacto, La construcción del género, El tiempo y el espacio, La creación literaria, Las relaciones interpersonales and La dualidad del ser. The use of representative work from art history, as well as film and audio sources complement the learning process. After passing the AP Literature exam, the students may receive the equivalent of one year of world language credit in college. Prerequisites: Spanish for Spanish Speakers 2/AB or AP Spanish Language A/B or Departmental placement test.
